3 Positive Steps for Managers to Curb Workplace Bullying

3 Positive Steps for Managers to Curb Workplace Bullying3 Positive Steps for Managers to Curb Workplace Bullying3 Positive Steps for Managers to Curb Workplace Bullying Namie, PhD, author of The Bully-Free Workplace Stop Jerks, Weasels Snakes from Killing Your Organization (Wiley, 2011).Back in 2007, many were surprised to learn that 37% of all adult Americans claimed to have been bullied at work. The scientific poll by the Workplace Bullying Institute (WBI) used the definition repeated mistreatment by one or more employees that takes the form of either verbal abuse, threats, intimidation, humiliation, interference with work or some combination. Bosses were the main perpetrators (in 72% of incidents). Workplace bullying held steady at 35% according to the 2010 WBI survey.Employers have a dismal record of voluntarily dealing with bullying. Why? Bullying benefits executives. Or people dont know how to stop it. If the former is true, laws are needed to compel attention. Better to assum e knowledge and skill shortcomings. While waiting for executives to realize the benefits from adopting a comprehensive solution, there is much that can be done by managers and supervisors to tamp down bullying and dilute its destructive impact on employee and organizational health. Here are three simple action steps for managers that can be done today.1.) Hold confirmed bullies accountable. Drop the go work it out between yourselves ducking of your responsibility as manager. Get involved or the festering problem eventually will prevent any work from getting done.Your task is easier if there a clear statement about what conduct is, and is not, acceptable in the company. If none exists, you can always create one in collaboration with the team that applies to those you supervise. If such a code does not exist, write a list of what you consider unacceptable. Use work-relevant impacts to justify each item. Share that list with everyone you supervise. If the alleged bully is your favorite, y ou will have trouble believing that she or he is capable of being mean. To solve the problem, you have to shelve favoritism. All your other employees are counting on you to do so.Before questioning the alleged bully, provide the complaining target with physical separation for safety, assuring that it is not punitive. Do it because retaliation follows questioning of the bully. Bullies will justify their conduct targets make them do it or they are perfectionists. Assess the relevance in terms of impact on the work teams ability to perform without fear. The rationale for your 11 interviews with employees is a checkup of the work climate, rather than an investigation. Getting information from terrified coworkers is nearly impossible. Many side with bullies for self-protection. Ask if they personally ever had negative encounters with the alleged bully. Ask how negative things can be hidden from you. Ask if they have seen personal changes, minor or major, in any coworkers.Should you be con cerned? Believe the accuser until proven otherwise. Bullies lie. Humiliated targets are ashamed. With a mind untainted by favoritism, you will understand the competing versions of reality represented by the alleged bully and target. If the facts confirm that your line in the sand was crossed, make the bully apologize. Choose other appropriate consequences (HR can advise). Promise coworkers freedom from bullying in the future. Help restore the targeted workers health paid time off, counseling, support. Monitor the bullys conduct, imposing the threat of termination for non-compliance with the policy or your list. Practice in executing this step makes it easier. Paradoxically, it also becomes rarer.2.) Catch and correct peer bullies. If you stumble on a colleague berating a worker, you can intervene. The least risky method is to tug on the managers arm to remove her or him. Simply interrupt the incident. Then, deal with it behind closed doors for dignitys sake. It is more likely that a worker supervised by your subordinate or by another supervisor seeks your help. Do not ignore the person who asked you for relief. When you have the manager alleged to be a bully alone, make the case for stopping the bullying behavior. Encourage change by citing impact on employee health, morale, productivity, trust and loyalty. If an anti-bullying policy exists, remind her or him of the hassle of a complaint and investigation. Good managers do not use tactics of intimidation, domination or humiliation. Become the anti-bullying advocate within the management team.3.) Your Management Style Could you be the bully? This is the hardest step of all. Ask your family. Do you feel constantly misunderstood and misperceived? Do you think your standards are high and wonder why others seem to not care as much as you? Is it impossible for you make your contributions subordinate to those of others?Indicators at work include being excluded from social events. At meetings, are your ideas never met w ith dissenting views? Is the employee turnoverrate in units you supervise higher than elsewhere in the organization? Is absenteeism so high that production is subpar? Do you see decline in the pool of available talent so that no new hires seem acceptable?Look in the mirror. You are the problem. Turn to your staff to ask how you could change to eliminate the above problems. Follow their instructions.Author BioDr. Gary Namie is President of The Work Doctor, consulting specialists in workplace bullying. Civilian Careers in Criminology and Criminal Justice

Civilian Careers in Criminology and Criminal JusticeCivilian Careers in Criminology and Criminal JusticeMany people immediately think of law enforcement officers and police detectives when they talk about careers in criminology and criminal justice. These are the most visible professions within criminal justice, but theyre not the only ones. You dont have to be a police officer to work in criminology. A host of jobs are available to those whose interests go far beyond law enforcement, from working with evidence to working with crime victims. Civilians vs. Sworn Officers- Whats the Difference? Sworn officers have the power to arrest individuals who are breaking or have broken the law. Theyre also authorized to carry weapons. Theyre literally sworn as the title suggests- theyve taken an oath to uphold the law. This doesnt detract from the contributions of those who work in civilian capacities. Their goal is to assist in upholding the law as well. Crime Analysts A crime analyst plays a vital role in assisting local, state, and federal law enforcement officers in the fight against crime. They gather intelligence and data, and they help officers in nearly every aspect of law enforcement, from planning patrols to identifying emerging trends and criminal activity. Crime analysts study police reports to help predict when, where, and what crimes will occur. They also provide crucial information in officer safety bulletins regarding dangerous people and trends, helping to make sure that more officers make it home safely at the end of their shifts. Forensic Science Careers Forensic scientists work in a variety of conditions and numerous specializations. They might work in a crime lab or as part of a crime scene investigative unit. Forensics technicians collect, preserve, and analyze evidence, then they present their findings to investigators to help them solve crimes. Some forensic technicians specialize in bloodstain pattern analysis. They look at the spread and pattern of blood spatter at crime scenes to gather information about how a crime occurred, as well as insight into the schriftart of person who might have committed it. Other technicians are experts in ballistics. They can obtain valuable information about the trajectories of projectiles, the caliber, and the type of bullets used in crimes. They can even help identify the type of gun used. Forensic anthropologists use their knowledge of human remains to develop information about the victims of crimes. They can help give investigators clues as to the types of injuries a victim sustained, the age of the victim, and even certain identifying characteristics such as height and weight- all based on little more than a few bones and skeletal remains. Forensic Psychology Forensic psychologists work in various components within the criminal justice system. Some work as jury consultants, helping attorneys analyze and select jurors for trials and prepare witnesses for the stand. Others work in the corrections industry, helping to rehabilitate convicted criminals or evaluate accused criminals to determine whether theyre competent to stand trial. One very intriguing career in forensic psychology is that of the criminal profiler. These professionals work closely with investigators to provide information about the perpetrators of serious crimes, giving detectives leads based on personality type that can even help identify the age and race of a criminal when they have little else to go on. Criminologists Criminology is the study of crime and its causes, costs, and consequences. The job of a criminologist is to do just that study crime. Criminologists teach in universities, work for think tanks, and assist policymakers in creating public policy regarding crime and the appropriate response to crime. Forensic Computer Investigators Computer investigators use their knowledge of technology and their computer skills to assist investigators in collecting electronic ev idence and tracking cybercriminals. They can be called upon to dig deep into a hard drive to recover lost or erased data, or they might work for cybersecurity firms, helping to create and test measures that protect systems from hackers. Loss Prevention Specialists Loss prevention specialists work for retail stores. Their primary function is to mitigate or eliminate the theft of merchandise by both customers and employees. People who work in loss prevention often hold degrees in criminology and criminal justice, and they use the job as a stepping stone toward careers in law enforcement or security. Many, however, go on to successful careers preventing theft for major corporations. Child Protective Services These workers do their own type of investigation, often with the assistance of other authorities. Its their job to look into allegations of child neglect or abuse. These allegations can be received from a variety of sources family members, neighbors, friends, or adults who have a duty to report their suspicions by law, such as teachers and medical personnel. Sports Security and Investigations Theres even a place for criminology in major sports. The National Football League, Major League Baseball, and the NCAA all make use of security professionals to maintain the integrity of the sport. These professionals protect players from others and from themselves, and they look into allegations such as cheating, rules violations, and steroid use. Police Dispatcher Law enforcement officers need tons of support to perform their jobs well. Police dispatchers provide that support by taking calls for service, recording and providing case numbers, and sending units to incidents that require police intervention. Dispatchers are an indispensable component of any law enforcement agency, and this can be a wonderful career opportunity for those who want to work in law enforcement without having to serve as police officers. Victim Advocates Victim advocates aid and assists the victims of crimes. They might arrange for medical services in the immediate aftermath of a crime, then later walk victims through the judicial process and help with any questions or needs the victim might face. Many advocates are employed by state courts or state services, but others work for police departments. Private Investigators OK, maybe you do want to carry a gun. Private investigators must typically be licensed by the state in which they operate, and they must have permits to carry firearms if theyre going to do so. The primary job of this type of career is to collect evidence, both physical evidence and through witness testimony, that can then be turned over to the authorities. But private investigators arent limited to issues of crimes. They might investigate domestic situations, potential employees, or missing persons. They can work independently, through an agency, or even for private corporations or law firms. There Are Plenty of Careers Availabl e These are just a few of the many careers available to those who are interested in civilian employment in criminology and criminal justice. The options are nearly limitless, and youre sure to find a job that will meet all your needs with the right preparation and education.

A Kids Kitchen

A Kids Kitchen A Kids Kitchen A Kids KitchenFor 25 years, University of Tulsa engineering students have used their talents to address the special needs of Oklahoma residents with physical and developmental disabilities. The program is called Make a Difference EngineeringMADE at TUand students from all departments in the College of Engineering and Natural Sciences are invited to participate. This year, seven seniors designed and built a small portable kitchen as an educational tool for developmentally challenged children. The kitchen allows children to participate in food preparation ranging from mixing and chopping to slicing and dicing. Christopher Butler, Sam Carr, Mohamed Ghori, David Gogolakis, Salman Hassan Al-Ali, Joe Meier, and Khristen Thornburg worked directly with staff from the Little Light House, a tuition-free Christian center for preschool-age children with special needs.Molly Smith, the Little Light Houses director of development, said, The goal of the center is to provi de hope for families of children with special needs and improve their quality of life.John Henshaw, chair of the universitys Department of Mechanical Engineering, is the MADE at TU advisor. TUs goals are broadto use the engineering talents of students to make life better for people with disabilities, Henshaw said. This program not only helps the students develop comprehensive technical skills, but it also helps them gain the experience of client interaction. The project features cooking tools that children can control with supervision.According to David Gogolakis, the team leader on the kitchen project, The Little Light House pitched the project to us as a potential customer for our senior project and collectively, seven of us put about 1,400 hours in on creating the Mobile Cooking Center. The modified kitchen is designed to be safe and friendly for the children, who will use it under supervision of a therapist or aide. The cooking center is a completely functional mini kitchen with u pper and lower cabinets for storage, two fold-down tables for counter space, an induction stovetop where the surface area around the pan doesnt get hot, a cutting board, mixer, a mechanical arm to help pour ingredients into bowls, and a slicer and dicer. The kitchen has options to accommodate different children, many of whom have mobility and sensory challenges. The TU students purchased a Ninja slicer and dicer and then built stands for it, so it can be operated by remote control. After the therapists plug the machine into a specific outlet, the children can push a button, allowing them to watch the process in action. The kitchen has plastic knives that are safe for the kids to use with assistance. Therapists can attach different spoons or measuring cups to the pouring arm, which functions similar to a desk lamp. The arm can be repositioned to pour ingredients into a second bowl. The design team helped the children make pancakes in the mobile kitchen the day it was delivered. Accordin g to Meier, a remote control device was used to operate the mixer to mix pancake batter. All of the kitchens components can be operated both manually and by remote control. The mechanical engineering students have listened to our needs of making all their projects accessible to all of our children, said Dede Flately, physical therapist at the Little Light House. They have provided projects that help the children with different aspects of their development by providing a fun activity that will not seem to be work to them. For Further DiscussionThe goal of the center is to provide hope for families of children with special needs and improve their quality of life.Molly Smith, the Little Light House

The Unexpected Contract You Should Write When Taking on a New Job

The Unexpected Contract You Should Write When Taking on a New JobThe Unexpected Contract You Should Write When Taking on a New JobCongratulations, NeilI welches sitting across from an HR exec at Walmart a few years ago. His hand was outstretched, and on the desk in front of us was a crisp sheet of paper spelling out all the terms of my new promotion. I shook his hand and left doing mental cartwheels down the hall. This was it The dream job mora money, bigger team, fancier title, more interesting work. And more total work, too. A few more meetings. A few more hours. A few more business trips. A bigger job means bigger responsibilities, which would probably mean dedicating more time and effort overall- thats just how promotions work, I inwardly shrugged.Promotion letter in hand, I popped my head into the office of one of my mentors at the company Guess what I got the big promotion.Congratulations he said. Are you going to accept it?What did he mean, Was I going to accept it?Well, it feel s like a slam dunk, I replied, wondering what he was getting at. I feel like I should sign this right now and head straight back to the SVPs office.Go ahead and sign it, he said with smile. But its a big job Youll be leading a large team and on the road a lot. So, before you hand it back in, make koranvers you take the contract home, share it with your wife, and write up another contract, too- a family contract. One between you and her. The company is changing all your terms, arent they? So, make sure you revisit all your home terms, too.He had a point. Many of us have contracts with our employers, but few of us have contracts with our partners.Strange as it sounds, I went home that night and pitched the idea to my wife, Leslie. We both agreed it was a smart move to think deliberately about how changes in either of our careers might affect work-life balance for both of us. So, we sat down and spent a long time that night discussing things. At the end, we arrived at a short contract with four key bullet points whose terms are still in force today1. Nights AwayAs a parent, it breaks my heart to miss bath time. Knowing theres a finite number of these nights in our lives, Leslie weighed approximately how many nights per year I might have to be away in the new role. We came up with a number that we could both live with. Then, we began tracking it.The nights-away cap wed agreed to was easy to break down per month, so if I had a really busy month (say, a conference out of town) then I knew Id need to cut back on travel the next month to make up for it. No, I never actually told my boss, Sorry, Ive hit my quota, send someone else In fact, just tracking things helped me stop sweating every business trip. I simply counted them toward an annual number. Plus, if I ever fumbled this bullet point, I knew Id have to make it up on one of the subsequent three (theres only so much control you have when youre working for someone else). Can this hamper your career? Absolutely. Le ts not pretend you can have everything. Come up with a number that works for your family, and stick with it.Related Heres How Metric Parenting Can Relieve Working Parent Guilt2. Family DayWe decided it was important for us to have one family day every weekend- a full day with no cell phones, no extended family, no friends, nothing. Just me, my wife, our two little kids, and zero interruptions. Before setting this down in writing, so many weekends would rush past in a blur of gymnastics, birthday parties, and extended family dinners. They were fun But there was no deep family time for just us four. To be honest, sticking to this bullet point has been really tough. Sometimes you feel terrible declining an invitation to an outing or get-together you know will be really special. But prioritizing one family day every weekend creates energy, and it helps you be choosier about your commitments. After all, theres a real risk in saying yes to things reflexively.3. Nights OutThe third item in our contract reads NNO/LNO Neils Night Out/Leslies Night Out. This is a fun one. Once a week, we each get one night to do whatever we feel like. That can mean dinner with a friend, catching some live music by myself, spinning around in circles in empty parking lots- hey, who cares, its my night off Leslie gets her own each week, too.Again, energy is the priceless commodity here. Its too easy to collapse on the couch in a Netflix coma once the kids are in bed. These regular night-out appointments help us plan to prioritize ourselves and maintain our other relationships, too. I feel like a great father and husband both before and after I go away on business, because I get energy from those nights to carry me through the time Im away.Plus, I get my own stories and experiences to bring back into the home while continuing to develop my life as an individual. The best part is theres no guilt, since my wife and I both practice this habit in equal proportion (so in a way our two nights pay for each other). The two nights end up feeling like a gift to each other- even when we (admittedly) need to push one another to actually take them during a tiring week.Related How I Knew When Saying Yes Was Hurting My Productivity (and Worse)4. Vacation DaysI know work contracts generally have a number of vacation days spelled out. But most of us arent taking real vacation. We either dont take all our days- by some recent estimates most Americans leave paid time-off that theyre entitled to on the table- or we work while were away. Its also worth noting that some companies have policies where you can either buy additional vacation days or take unpaid personal days. Whats my point? Simply that its one thing for your employer to tell you what you get and another for you and your family to decide what you want to take. After all, vacation time is one of the things many people dont bother to negotiate when theyre considering a new job offer or weighing a promotion. In fact, you might even be able to swap out something smaller, like a bonus, for more vacation time if you ask for it. After finalizing our contract, I took advantage each year of a policy at Walmart that let me apply for an extra couple weeks of unpaid leave, and then took the 5% annual hit to my salary. It was a worthwhile tradeoff for the extra time with my family, and I never noticed the funds that were being skimmed off the top.Thats it Four bullet points- but they couldnt be more important. Everybody will have a different set of terms that matter to them and their partner. Maybe yours will involve school drop-off and pickup, or whether or not you work from home certain days of the week. In any case, you dont have to march into work and share this work-life contract with your boss. The point is simply to help you articulate your values, then actually express them in how you live.Ive actually found this helps me make smarter, speedier decisions about the way Im spending my time. For instance, if I can t avoid traveling on a weekend and miss a family day, then I automatically know I need to book two back-to-back family days on an upcoming weekend. Good excuse for a road trip As you think about a contract that works with you and your partner, remember that the goal is never to be perfect. Its simply to be a little better- and more balanced- than before.Related The Insanely Simple Way to Prioritize Your Life and WorkThis article was originally published on nicht weit davon entfernt sein Company. 4 ways too much caffeine keeps you from realizing your potential

4 ways too much caffeine keeps you from realizing your potential4 ways too much caffeine keeps you from realizing your potentialTodays tip for improving your wertmiger zuwachs is one of the most simple and straightforward methods Ive provided thus far. For many people, this tip has the potential to have a bigger impact than any other single action. The catch? You have to cut down on caffeine, and as any caffeine drinker can attest, this is easier said than done. For those who arent aware, the ability to manage your emotions and remain calm under pressure has a direct link to your performance. TalentSmart has conducted research with mora than a million people, and weve found that 90% of top performers are high in emotional intelligence. These individuals are skilled at managing their emotions (even in times of high stress) in order to remain calm and in control.FollowLadders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard coveringHappiness,Productivity,Job Satisfaction,Coffee, andmor aThe good Isnt really goodMost people start drinking caffeine because it makes them feel more alert and improves their mood. Many studies suggest that caffeine actually improves cognitive task performance (memory, attention span, etc.) in the short-term. Unfortunately, these studies fail to consider the participants caffeine habits. New research from Johns Hopkins Medical School shows that performance increases due to caffeine intake are the result of caffeine drinkers experiencing a short-term reversal of caffeine withdrawal.By controlling for caffeine use in study participants, John Hopkins researchers found that caffeine-related performance improvement is nonexistent without caffeine withdrawal. In essence, coming off caffeine reduces your cognitive performance and has a negative impact on your mood. The only way to get back to normal is to drink caffeine, and when you do drink it, you feel like its taking you to new heights. In reality, the caffeine is just taking your performan ce back to normal for a short period. The bad AdrenalineDrinking caffeine triggers the release of adrenaline. Adrenaline is the source of the fight or flight response, a survival mechanism that forces you to stand up and fight or run for the hills when faced with a threat. The fight-or-flight mechanism sidesteps rational thinking in favor of a faster response. This is great when a bear is chasing you, but not so great when youre responding to a curt email. When caffeine puts your brain and body into this hyper-aroused state, your emotions overrun your behavior.Irritability and anxiety are the most commonly seen emotional effects of caffeine, but caffeine enables all of your emotions to take charge. The negative effects of a caffeine-generated adrenaline surge are not just behavioral. Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University found that large doses of caffeine raise blood pressure, stimulate the heart, and produce rapid shallow breathing, which readers of Emotional Intelligence 2.0 kno w deprives the brain of the oxygen needed to keep your thinking calm and rational. The ugly SleepYour self-control, focus, memory, and information processing speed are all reduced when you dont get enough - or the right kind - of sleep. Your brain is very fickle when it comes to sleep. For you to wake up feeling rested, your brain needs to move through an elaborate series of cycles. You can help this process along and improve the quality of your sleep by reducing your caffeine intake.Heres why youll want to caffeine has a six-hour half-life, which means it takes a full twenty-four hours to work its way out of your system. Have a cup of joe at eight a.m., and youll still have 25% of the caffeine in your body at eight p.m. Anything you drink after noon will still be at 50% strength at bedtime. Any caffeine in your bloodstream- with the negative effects increasing with the dose- makes it harder to fall asleep. When you do finally fall asleep, the worst is yet to come. Caffeine disrupts the quality of your sleep by reducing rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, the deep sleep when your body recuperates. When caffeine disrupts your sleep, you wake up tired the next day. Youre naturally going to be inclined to grab a cup of coffee or an energy drink to try to make yourself feel better. The caffeine produces surges of adrenaline, which further your emotional handicap.Caffeine withdrawal and lack of sleep leave you feeling tired in the afternoon, so you drink more caffeine, which leaves even more of it in your bloodstream at bedtime. Caffeine very quickly creates a vicious cycle.WithdrawalLike any stimulant, caffeine is physiologically and psychologically addictive. If you do choose to lower your caffeine intake, you should do so slowly under the guidance of a qualified medical professional. The researchers at Johns Hopkins found that caffeine withdrawal causes headache, fatigue, sleepiness, and difficulty concentrating. Some people report feeling flu-like symptoms, depress ion, and anxiety after reducing intake by as little as one cup a day. Slowly tapering your caffeine dosage each day can greatly reduce these withdrawal symptoms. This article first appeared on LinkedIn.

What is the why of your job You should know

What is the 'why' of your job You should know What is the 'why' of your job You should know Collecting silly kid jokes becomes a pastime when you have young ones in your life. “I’ve been trying to memorize the alphabet, but I only know 25 letters. I don’t know why.”That joke was top of mind this week as my husband and I were trying to enjoy breakfast in a restaurant’s outside courtyard. The early-morning serenity was ruined by landscapers armed with buzz saws cutting down trees in the neighboring parking lot. We were annoyed by more than the noise. The trees were beautiful and provided the only shade in the area. Why were they being chopped down? A woman sitting near us was dismayed, too. She happened to be a landscape architect and explained the trees were a drought-tolerant variety perfect for this setting. My curiosity got the better of me. Waving to get one of the landscaper’s attention, I asked the obvious. I was frustrated by their response: “We don’t know. We wondered the same thing. These are perfectly healthy trees. It makes us sad, we can’t underst and why they should be cut down.”I asked another seemingly obvious question: “Then why do it?” Their answer pained me: “Because our boss told us to.” I continued to pry, but it became apparent that even as adults, they didn’t know the whole alphabet. They didn’t know why.In the interest of your own self-development, you would be wise to be sure you know why you do what you do each day. Whether your goals or objectives and key results are cascaded down or set by you, take the time to clarify, negotiate or reframe them so you can fully engage.ClarifyIf your goal is to buzzsaw perfectly healthy trees, be sure you understand why. When your parents told you to do something as a child, they might not have appreciated your impertinence when you countered with “Why?” (They probably answered with,” Because I’m your father and I told you to do it.”) But as an adult, you have a responsibility to understand why you do what you do at work. You might still get labeled as im pertinent, but if you ask for clarification in the right way, you might also earn respect - and maybe have people thinking twice about the fairness of what they are asking from you. What if that landscaper had asked, “I understand that this morning you want me to remove all the trees in the Mount Carmel parking lot and transfer them to the chipper where another team will pick them up. I want to meet your expectations, and I’m also hoping to learn as much as I can about our business, so I have a couple of questions.“Why are the trees being taken down? Are they diseased, interfering with parked cars, or being replaced with more drought-tolerant varieties? Do the leaves cause a problem or have there been complaints? If customers ask us why we’re taking them down, how do you want us to respond?”If you think those questions are too formal and you have a good relationship with your manager, you could simply ask, “That’s a strange request, we’re used to planting trees, not chopping them down. What’s the story?”Negotiate your goalIf you find your goal unfair, unattainable or not important to your role’s purpose, be proactive and present alternatives. If you need more authority to get the job done, be specific about what you need and why.Allay your manager’s fears of giving you the authority you’ve earned by providing examples from the past, a rationale for the present and a plan for the future. Do your due diligence and build a business case for changing your goal to one that is reasonable and relevant.Reframe your goalIf the way your goal is written or defined doesn’t align with your values or generate interest and meaning for you, reframe it so that it does. Focus on what you can learn or how you can contribute by pursuing your goal. The skill of self-leadership includes having the mindset and skill set to proactively clarify, negotiate and reframe your goals. So, whatever you do, don’t start your day with only 25 letters. 3 exciting facts about goals that no one talks about

3 exciting facts about goals that no one talks about 3 exciting facts about goals that no one talks about The first of the three exciting facts is that “Luck” shouldn’t be part of the equation in your mind when setting a goal.FACT #1: Luck shouldn’t be a factor in your mindWhen you’re thinking about something big you want to pursue, it can almost feel impossible from where you’re currently sitting.Especially if tens of thousands - or potentially even millions - of other people want the same “dream” you are wanting.I felt this way when I decided a few years ago that I wanted to become a professional writer. With literally millions of people attempting to write for a living on the internet, it seemed like luck had to be involved. It seems like some magic incident had to occur. Something completely out of my control. The same is true of other goals I’ve since set, and goals I’m even now pursuing. When you have something HUGE you want to do, it can feel completely impossible from your current vantage point. There are only a few people TRULY doing what you want to do. And s omehow they got there. But certainly, you couldn’t do the same. Right? That feeling is completely natural and leads us to believe LUCK is an integral part of achieving goals. And whether it is or isn’t doesn’t really matter.A much more important FACT is that there actually is a pathway to your goal. At this present moment, you probably don’t know what that path is.But it does exist. From where you currently are to where you truly deeply want to go. No matter how far away. No matter how “dreamy” and seemingly impossible. There actually is a path. And even more interesting is that the behaviors you need to DO to achieve your goals are not rocket science. They are probably very simple and non-complex.Of course, you need to practice and fail and eventually master. But the behaviors and skills to achieve your wildest dreams are not beyond you. In fact, if you actually got to work on them, you’d be surprised how “do-able” it actually is.There is a tangible, practical, and w alkable path to achieving whatever goal you want to achieve. There is a tangible, practical, and walkable path to becoming a millionaire in a way that resonates with you. There is a tangible, practical, and walkable path to having deeply impactful and intimate relationships - to having whatever form of freedom or experience you want in life.Whatever it is you want, there is a path from where you are to where you want to go. Luck may be involved, but it’s not actually necessary. What is necessary, though, is: knowing where you want to go, knowing how to get there, and knowing you can do it. All three of these things become increasingly clear as you begin walking your path. They are the three things required to experience deep motivation - according to one of the most well-researched theories of motivation.Indeed, all three of these things are actually feedback loops which fuel each other. As you become more clear on what you want, you’ll discover how to achieve it As you study how to achieve it and begin moving forward, your confidence in your ability to walk the path will increase As your confidence increases, your vision and clarity of that vision will also increase, thus fueling this whole process over and over - a virtuous cycle upward! Eventually, momentum and motivation take completely over and you’ll have a hard time stopping yourself from achieving your goal. Eventually, your identity shifts and you become what it is you’re seeking. You attract your goals and dreams by the person you are.In every instance, you become the person who can have the goal before achieving it. It is BECAUSE your identity fully embraces your future results that those results become yours. As you learn and act and move in the direction you want to go - you’ll change as a person. The more aggressive you act toward your goal, the faster and deeper will be your change.- - - FACT #1: DON’T WORRY ABOUT LUCK. THERE ACTUALLY IS A PATH FROM WHERE YOU ARE TO WHERE YOU WANT TO GO. JUST WALK THE PATH. YOU CAN GET THERE. IT’S NOT AS COMPLEX AS YOU’RE MAKING IT.- - - It may seem impossible from here. But it’s not. Soon enough, you’ll start to realize that it’s actually not as hard as it seems. And you’ll wonder why so few peop le strive for big and amazing things in their lives. You’ll wonder why so many people sell themselves short. One of the main reasons they do is because they genuinely believe LUCK is a core factor. It’s not.FACT #2: When You Set A Goal, Your Brain Will Immediately Begin Producing Obstacles Pointing The WayYour brain is a brilliant organism. When you set a new goal - one in which you truly want - then your brain and body will immediately begin conjuring up obstacles to achieving that goal. These obstacles could be financial, time-based, skill-based, relationship-based … they could be anything. The obstacles are what you must successfully pass through in order to get to where you want to go.You’re never pre-qualified to do something great. It is by passing through the obstacles that you become great. Passing through the obstacles is how you are transformed and changed as a person. If you’re not willing to pass through difficult challenges, then you are what psychologists would call, emotionally inflexible. You’re emotionally immature if you won’t deal with challenges and obstacles. Childish stuff. It takes emotional flexibility to take on challenges you’ve never taken on before. Most people avoid hard emotions and most people evade true learning - which is the essence of passing through obstacles upward.Your success becomes inevitable when you stop avoiding growth and instead, it becomes your quest, joy, and obsession. Indeed, you can get to the point where you THRIVE under pressure. You can learn to LOVE doing things which produce anxiety and even awkward emotions. For example, I needed to film an add for a promotion I’m currently running. I decided to film the add from my cell phone in a grocery store surrounded by several people. It was totally awkward for me, until it wasn’t. I had people looking at me and wondering what I was doing. And this is exactly why I did it. As the saying goes, “It’s easy to learn to meditate out in nature. Try le arning to meditate on the back of the bus.”You get to choose how steep your learning curve is. When you face big obstacles head-on, rather than from the side or avoiding them for years, then you steepen your learning curve. As you make your learning curve steeper through increased external difficulty and pressure - your inner resilience, confidence, and capability increase.Rober Brault once said, “We are kept from our goals not by obstacles, but by a clear path to lesser goals.”It’s not actually obstacles that stop you from getting from where you are to where you want to be. Instead, it is by avoiding those obstacles and by opting for an easier path with fewer obstacles.Fear is the direction of your ideal future.Everything you want is on the opposite side of fear and obstacles. The obstacle IS the only way forward.- - - FACT #2: YOUR BRAIN IS A BRILLIANT MACHINE. WHEN YOU SET A GOAL, YOUR BRAIN WILL IMMEDIATELY POINT THE WAY TO ACHIEVING THAT GOAL IN THE FORM OF OBSTACLES. IT IS BY PASSING THROUGH THOSE OBSTACLES THAT YOU TRANSFORM YOURSELF INTO A PERSON THAT CAN HAVE YOUR GOALS.- - - Fact # 3: If You’re Not Pursuing A Bigger Future, Then You’re Living In Your PastIf you’re not currently pursuing goals that challenge and excite you, then you’re not an exciting or interesting person.People who aren’t striving for something bigger are boring.People who aren’t striving for something bigger have “run out of future,” in the words of Dan Sullivan. When you run out of future, then you have nothing to live for in the here-and-now. You’re not actively trying to change things. You’re simply existing and dragging your feet. Your brain has nothing to engage it. You’re atrophying as a person.People are very quick to get into subconscious patterns. This is easy to spot in relationships. The longer a relationship exists, the more “past” there is to draw from in that relationship, and the more likely patterns are likely to occur - keeping the relationship from going to new and exciting places.Having a goal gives you something exciting to focus on. It gives you a future to pursue. And only by pursuing a bigger future can you create different results from your past.If you’re not creating a new and exciting future, then you’re living a pattern from your past. If this is the case, then your life and relationships are dull, boring, and sub-par.Your life doesn’t have to be dull and boring.Your life should be filled with excitement and surprise. You become more spontaneous and flexible as a person by pursuing a new and different future. What do you want your romantic relationship to look like? What do you want your environment to look like? What do you want your income to look like? What do you want your body to look like? You get to decide all of these things. You get to decide your lifestyle, happiness, success, connection, and joy. If you don’t create these things, then your past and/or environment are creating them for you.Set goals and begin living a new and exciting future. Create new emotions. Allow yourself to have more surprise and spontaneity in your life. Stop repeating the patterns of the past.Stop living a boring life.Stop living a boring day, today.Do something different.Use a little imagination.Embrace some crazy emotions by taking new action.Surprise yourself and others by doing something totally different.Your brain needs 2 things to thrive: nutrition and novelty. Novelty is “NEWNESS.” Your brain literally needs you to do something new or it gets old. An old and atrophied brain is not going to produce inspiring or interesting ideas and outcomes.Break the habit of the past.Break the patterns of the past.Upgrade your relationships today.Upgrade your confidence.Upgrade your environment and income.Have fun.Play more.Embrace surprise.Embrace success.- - - FACT #3: PURSUING GOALS SHIFTS YOUR LIFE FROM BEING BORING AND REPETITIVE TO EXCITING AND SURPRISING.- - - Ready to upgrade? You follow this daily, your life will change very quickly.Get the cheat sheet here! This article first appeared on Medium.

Having a purpose in life improves both your sleep and salary

Having a purpose in life improves both your sleep and salary Having a purpose in life improves both your sleep and salary If you’re having trouble getting out of bed in the morning, it’s evidence that you need something to live for.A new Northwestern University study found that one simple thing can improve the quality of your sleep: having a purpose in life.Sleep is particularly a problem for older individuals. 40% of older adults have a sleep disorder. What the Northwestern researchers found is that having meaning in your life can make all the difference for this group. The researchers recruited 823 participants, whose average age was 79, to answer questionnaires on their satisfaction with their life and the quality of their sleep.“Purpose in life” was determined through a 10-question psychological wellbeing test. Participants would rate how they felt to statements like “I feel good when I think of what I’ve done in the past and what I hope to do in the future” and “some people wander aimlessly through life, but I am not one of them.”People with meaning in their life sleep better at n ightParticipants who had more meaning and purpose in their lives were 63% less likely to have sleep apnea and 52% less likely to have restless leg syndrome.“Helping people cultivate a purpose in life could be an effective drug-free strategy to improve sleep quality, particularly for a population that is facing more insomnia,” senior study author Jason Ong said in a university statement.Well, yes we’d prefer to have a purpose in life rather than taking an Ambien, but who has that kind of time? This finding makes sense. Previous studies have found that people who have purpose in their lives are more likely to engage in healthy behavior like exercise and mindfulness. In fact, researchers said that as a result of this study, they would be looking into using mindfulness-based therapies on older adults with sleep disorders. Mindfulness helps you put your life on perspective and focus on the task at hand. Here are mindfulness techniques you can incorporate into your routine.Beyond emot ional and psychological benefits, sleep has also been linked to higher productivity and wages. Yes, that’s right. Getting more shut-eye literally pays off in the long-run. A 2016 study found that people who increased their sleep by just an hour had their wages increase by 5%.So finding meaning in your life leads to better sleep, which leads to happier and productive workers and more money. This is an equation we can all get behind. It may seem small to take breathers at work and make sure to get that extra hour of sleep, but as these studies show, the math adds up.

The Easy Way to Decode a Twitter Resume

The Easy Way to Decode a Twitter Resume The Easy Way to Decode a Twitter Resume The # signs and shortened urls can be confusing. Follow this step-by-step guide to understanding Twitter’s language so that you can get your name out there. You can’t deny it. Job seekers and recruiters have a love affair with Twitter. With Twitter becoming perhaps the fastest-growing social network on the planet, job seekers and employers have been turning to this resource. To get seen by these eyes, you need an effective method to write a Twitter resume. But a resume in only 140 characters? Well, not quite, but here’s how you can do it.The challenge lies in making your Twitter resume: Succinct Easy to find And, fortunately, it’s easy to do. Two easy tools have surfaced to make these two challenges, less challenging. To make your resume succinct, there are link-shortening applications (like Bit.ly or TinyURL ) so your links don’t take up your entire character count. And to make your resume easy to find, Twitter has a great feature called “hashtags” that make the word tandem to it searchable.Recruiters constantly use hashtags to locate potential candidates by searching words like “resume,” certain skill sets, locations and so forth. As a result, you want to incorporate a few of these keywords as hashtags on your Twitter resume so you’ll be found when recruiters perform their searches. Some good examples of hashtags to include on your Twitter resume include #needajob, #laidoff and #jobangels, among others. A good resource for looking up hashtags is to check out www.hashtags.org.Now that you’ve got the basics, here are four major elements you should incorporate into your Tw itter resume:1. Desired job title2. Desired location3. Keywords with hashtags4. Link to resume, personal homepage or your social-networking profile page, such as LinkedIn.Once we put it all together, here is a good example of what a Twitter resume looks like and how a recruiter would decode it:Example RT #Donna Molinari seeks a LEAD/SR QA ENG JOB @teTalentNetwork â€"@TweetMyResume #resume #QA-Jobs-CADecoding The RT stands for retweet, which encourages your Twitter followers to retweet, or repeat, this to their followers Hashtag with your name makes you to easy to find Desired job title The first link is the Talent Network profile page leading to her online resume. The second link is the job seeker profile that was previously established on TweetMyJobs.com The hashtags are the search terms used, in this case, the name, quality assurance jobs in California and the encompassing term “resume.” Now what?Once you have your online profile and your Twitter resume set up, you’ll want to use them to market yourself to the Twitter community. According to John Walker, there are a number of approaches you can use. Co-founder of Talent Evolution, John is a recruiter and career coach who first recommends that you send this tweet to all your followers so they can retweet. Walker recommends following people who can help you in your job search. This list could include recruiters, job sites and potential hiring managers with companies for which you’d like to work.Walker also suggests making a secondary posting to your Facebook and Twitter profiles.Remember, the lifespan of a tweet is short, so retweet your resume periodically, but no more than once a week or every few days at the most. Can you get results from Twitter? Even though it’s a bit early in the Twitter job search game, Walker is aware of at least one recruiter who has made six recent placements as a result of finding good candidates solely on Twitter.SummaryWhile Twitter shouldn’t constitute your entire job-search strategy, you’ll most definitely want to incorporate this approach into your current set of tools. Since the number of recruiters and hiring managers using Twitter to find candidates has been growing rapidly over this past year, you’ll want to widen your online footprint to include Twitter and take advantage of this wide audience.

How New Managers Can Find Balance Management Resources

How New Managers Can Find Balance Management Resources How New Managers Can Find Balance Management Resources You’ve worked hard to be promoted to a leadership position. You want to get off on the right foot with your staff - and show your boss that she made the right decision in choosing you for the job. But now that you are a bona fide new manager, you are also realizing just how much responsibility you’ve agreed to take on. You may wonder: “How am I going to do all of this?” First, take comfort in knowing that it’s natural to feel a little overwhelmed. It’s not easy being a new manager and you will need some time to settle in to the role.   You also  must adapt to the varied work styles and needs of your staff members, plus meet a slew of new performance expectations at the firm. To top it all off, figuring out how to juggle your own projects and make time for your staff members’ needs - which you absolutely must do - is difficult. In a recent Robert Half Management Resources survey, nearly one-third (32 percent) of chief financial officers said balancing individual job responsibilities with time spent overseeing others is the biggest challenge for new managers. See more survey results in our infographic. View Infographic Despite the daunting to-do list before you, it’s important to your success as a new manager to avoid rookie mistakes, such as overextending yourself, failing to delegate and micromanaging your team, which  can undermine your ability to find the balance you seek. Following are some tips to help you steer clear of these missteps and succeed at staff management. Make your calendar work for you Now that you’re a new manager, you need to be even more strategic when planning  your work  schedule. First, set regular meetings with your team. (And to help ensure you make the best use of that time, see this post on running effective meetings.) Also, if possible, leave room on your calendar for set “office hours”- perhaps two hours every other Friday morning, for example - when your staff members are free to stop by without an appointment to discuss any issues or concerns with you. Then, block off specific times during the workweek when you will focus solely on your own tasks. Be sure to include some “think time” on your calendar as well. This is something many entrepreneurs and business leaders do and find that it helps them to be more productive. Empower your employees “Managing” does not mean “doing everything yourself.” New managers often think differently, though. They worry that if they don’t try to take on every demand that comes their way, their staff or their boss will somehow think that they aren’t able to handle the pressures of their new role. However, one of the best things a new manager can do is delegate projects to their team. Not only will assigning responsibilities to others help you stick to the strategic schedule you have outlined (see above), it also demonstrates your confidence in your team. Take care to strike the right balance here, too. Team members should feel that they are being given an opportunity to build their skills while making an important contribution to the firm - and aren't being dumped on. If there is any risk that you would be asking too much of your staff to take on more work because they already have full plates, talk to your supervisor about engaging interim support. Resist the temptation to micromanage Hovering over your employees’ shoulders is a surefire way to stifle productivity and innovation in your department and diminish morale. While you are certainly accountable for the success of your team, as a whole, your staff members are responsible for their tasks and meeting the specific expectations outlined for their roles. To do that, they need to be allowed to work autonomously as much as possible, and be free to make their own decisions - and yes, mistakes. Instead of micromanaging, clearly communicate what you expect from your staff members - as well as what they can expect from you as their new manager. This will help to foster a positive and collaborative relationship between you and your team. They will know that you trust them to do good work, and that they can look to you for support when needed. Lastly, if you want to succeed as a new manager, be willing to cut yourself some slack. Accept that you will need time to “learn the ropes” and refine your leadership skills. Also recognize that you are likely to make some mistakes along the way. And when your staff members see that you are putting forth earnest effort, and working with them to improve the organization, they’ll be quick to rally around you. The most effective leaders dont care if they are hated or loved

The most effective leaders don't care if they are hated or loved The most effective leaders don't care if they are hated or loved On Tuesday, Elon Musk announced that Tesla would begin laying off about 9% of its workforce.Perhaps unsurprisingly, many employees who had been let go took to Twitter to share their thoughts. And yet, as Bloomberg and Business Insider reported, some former employees expressed surprisingly warm feelings toward Musk and toward his organization.“I just want to let you know that I really enjoyed working for Tesla,” one person tweeted. “No hard feelings about being let go,” another wrote.“They still believe in the vision and in the mission of the company,” said Art Markman, a professor of psychology at the University of Texas at Austin. It’s evidence of the effective way Musk manages his staff, Markman told Business Insider.“When [Musk] made the decision to eliminate some of those positions, he was clearly not making friends, but still, the people who worked for him believed enough in his vision and respected that vision enough that they accepted that this was something that was necessary to do.”Markman used the Tesla firings to illustrate a broader point about leadership. The most successful leaders, according to Markman, aren’t preoccupied with whether their subordinates like them. Instead, they’re focused on doing what’s best for the organization.“Whether [your subordinates] love you as a person or whether they hate you as a person, they have to believe in you,” Markman said. Unfortunately, he added, this isn’t something most leaders understand. The most powerful combination in a leader is love with an element of fearAn article in the Harvard Business Review, by Harvard professor Amy Cuddy as well as Matthew Kohut and John Neffinger, suggests that both competence and warmth are important attributes in a leader. But “the way to influence - and to lead - is to begin with warmth. … Even a few small nonverbal signals - a nod, a smile, an open gesture - can show people that you’re pleased to be in their company and attentive to thei r concerns.”That said, be careful not to display too much warmth, at the expense of displaying dominance. According to Adam Galinsky, a professor of business at the Columbia Business School, it’s generally easier to add empathy to dominance than vice versa because the empathetic person may potentially come across as weak.Galinsky said the most powerful combination is love with some element of fear. In other words, a leader should be invested in people’s work experience. But if someone steps out of line or fails to achieve something they said they would, consequences should follow.Leading by fear alone can be an effective strategy, Galinsky said - but only for a short time period. “If your power slips,” he added, “a lot of people will be coming for your head.”Benjamin Jones, a professor of strategy at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, agreed that leading by fear isn’t a sustainable management strategy. “If a leader is hated or feared, then p eople may work hard in some circumstances, but in general they are going to be less mission-driven and probably more likely to do just what is required,” Jones said.Still, simply being adored isn’t enough; it’s also important to think about why a leader is loved in the first place.Jones said a leader should be loved not because they bring doughnuts to the office, but because “they treat their employees fairly and in a way that gives those employees a sense that when they work hard, they are rewarded, and that they are working hard in pursuit of some greater collective mission.”“If a leader is loved for the right reasons, it’s going to be a sign of organizational strength and success,” he added.Certain personality types may find it difficult not to be universally loved as a leaderOne problem leaders may face in landing on an effective management strategy is that everyone they’re managing is different.“Some are motivated by strong, dominant leaders; some are motiva ted by empathetic leaders,” Galinsky said. Leaders are “trying to find a strategy to work on both types of people.”Jones added that, especially in political contexts, love and hatred are rarely universal. Even if a leader improves social welfare overall, there could be one group who loses out.Leaders may struggle to reconcile different people’s needs. But they may also struggle with more personal issues. Markman explained that certain personality types - namely, agreeable and narcissistic - can have a hard time leading effectively.Agreeable people in leadership positions, Markman said, may “have difficulty doing things independently of the reaction that people are going to have to them.” Specifically, they want to be liked - and the idea that doing what’s best for the organization may turn some people off is scary. In fact, research suggests that agreeable people are less likely to become top managers in the first place. On the other hand, narcissistic people may tak e on leadership roles and “lash out at people who criticize them,” or try to take credit for other people’s work, which can be demotivating. As for highly agreeable leaders, Markman recommended developing personal strategies for, say, giving people news they don’t want to hear. Maybe you psych yourself up beforehand with a pep talk.Or, Markman said, you can simply recognize: “I’m an agreeable person.” Alienating some people may be necessary, but it doesn’t come naturally, and it may feel uncomfortable in the moment. The best leadership strategy is simply to do what’s best for the companyMarkman said that many people transitioning into leadership roles are preoccupied with the decision to be liked or feared. But “when you actually get into a leadership role,” he said, “it really does become much more about what you’re trying to accomplish with respect to the organization.”There’s work to be done - and spending time worrying what people will think of how y ou’re doing it is generally ineffective.Venture capitalist Mark Suster alluded to something similar in a 2010 post on his blog. “It takes a really self-confident and resilient individual to make all of these tough judgment calls on a daily basis,” he wrote.“But over time if you make the tough calls with no fudges, if you’re fair and don’t play favoritism, if you explain your rationale publicly and clearly, if you help soften the blow to the side that doesn’t get their way … people will respect you. And it is far better to be respected as a leader than loved.”This article first appeared on Business Insider.
